Cushier Portable Seat

Even with inserts, after alot of standing around (like at a museum, airshow, or outdoor BBQ) my feet start to get sore. When I ran across a “Sitpack” portable chair for $5 at a garage sale, I was intreagued. I mean, its the size of a portable umbrella, so finally I can carry something in my backpack to help take the weight off my feet when there are no benches around. But…

The seat itself is clever and compact, but was missing two things. 1) a cushion and 2) a way to carry it.

For the cushion, I found a $10 water bottle insulation bag that’s exactly the correct size. I cut it in half, sprayed the inside with some 777, and affixed it to the Sitpack. Perfect.

I’ll get a better picture of the cushion next time I’m using it. It actually looks pretty good.

For carrying, I took advantage of the fact that the hinge for the seat is a metal pin. I drilled a small hole about 1cm into the end of the pin. Note: push the pin partially out and clamp a vice grip on it so the heat from the drilling wouldn’t melt the plastic. Into the hole, I inserted a screw eye which I’d dremeled to fit into the hole. A little JB Weld and then clip a carabiner on to carry the seat anywhere!

I thought about soldering this, but JBWeld had plenty of strength and I didn’t have to worry about melting anything.

Now the little portable seat is more comfy and able to be carabiner’d to my backpack.
