Closet Door Coat Protector

We have a small coat closet in the hallway, and it is overstuffed with jackets. The result is that when you get something out then close the door, quite often in jacket gets caught in the hinge keeping the door from closing properly. You probably know the routine that happens next: stuff everything back into the closet a little deeper and and close the door quickly before it can get caught again. I got sick of doing this, and devised this simple fix using a coat hanger.

First thing to do is open up the metal coat hanger and bend it so that it forms a very thin U-shape about 1.5 to 2 feet long.

Put a little bit of fuzzy Velcro at the very tip of the U so that it is scraping against the door without hurting the finish.

Affix a small block of wood to the wall on the door hinge side of the closet. Make it about the same height as the door knob or handle.

Next, drill a pair of 1/8" holes at the top and bottom the block of the wood block offset by about an inch or so. The offsetting of the holes causes a springlike effect the coat hanger which visit against the door.

Now all you have to do is use pair of pliers to turn the ends of the coathanger in 90°. Insert the ends into the woodblock and slide a rubber band down the U so that it keeps the ends in the wood.

Voila! When you close the door, the coat hanger will close with it and keep the coat sleeves away from the door hinge. You’ll never have to worry about coats getting stuck in that door again!
